WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 7 ranked Wesleyan women's crew team saw their 2
nd varsity 8 boat race to a third-place finish in the grand final, highlighting the day for the Cardinals at the 2023 New England Championships held on Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond.
Racing against 17 boats, the Cardinals' 2
nd varsity 8 posted the fastest preliminary time at 6:48.63 to earn a spot in the grand final (top six boats in preliminaries). Racing against No. 1 Wellesley, No. 2 Tufts, No. 4 Bates, and Division I opponents MIT and Holy Cross, the Cardinals placed third overall with a time of 6:47.17 that was only fractions short of Wellesley (6:47.16) for second place. Bates won the 2
nd varsity 8 at 6:44.89.
Wesleyan's varsity 8 boat was ninth-fastest out of 20 in preliminaries with a time of 6:43.61, which was the fastest time turned in by any Cardinal boat on the day. In the petite final, Wesleyan managed a third-place finish with a time of 6:49.32, giving the varsity 8 a ninth-place finish overall out of 20 boats.
In the 3
rd varsity 8 race, Wesleyan earned a spot in the grand final, racing to a time of 7:11.26 in preliminaries. Racing against some of the top boats in the nation, Wesleyan managed a sixth-place finish overall in the grand final, clocking in at 7:13.38.
Wesleyan is back in action at the National Invitational on Friday, May 12 held at Lake Quinsigamond.
