CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wesleyan women's crew team excelled at the 2024 Head of the Charles on Sunday afternoon. The two-time defending national runner-up saw the varsity 8 boat finish second overall out of 34 boats to in the women's collegiate eights as they finished with a time of 17:10.584 on the Charles River.
Tufts, the defending NCAA Div. III Champions, won the event with a time of 17:02.698. The Cardinals finished well ahead of Little Three rival Williams who placed third overall with a mark of 17:14.585. Vanderbilt placed fourth (17:19.978) while Bates rounded out the top five finishers at 17:33.27.
The runner-up finish for the V8 is an improvement from last year that saw the Cardinals' top boat finish in fifth place. This also marks the highest finish for Wesleyan at the Head of the Charles since 2017.
The V8 boat held a 4+ second lead in the early going, clocking in at 3:49.092 at the riverside checkpoint and continued to lead Tufts at the midway point. The Jumbos made their move in the second half, taking the lead before the third checkpoint and closing out with a near eight-second lead on the Cardinals.
Wesleyan's 2
nd varsity 8 boat also competed and showed well, placing 15
th overall and third-best among the schools that fielded two boats in the competition. Wesleyan's 2V8 clocked in at 18:09.190.
The women's collegiate fours event saw Wesleyan place 25
th overall out of 40 boats, clocking in at 20:45.173.
The final event in the fall calendar for Wesleyan is on Saturday in Worcester at the Wormtown Chase.
