MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Playing host for the first time this season, the Wesleyan women's swimming and diving team fell to Bates College in NESCAC action, 173-118 on Saturday as
Ella Hall '28,
Olivia Stevenson '25 and
Mia Dezelic '27 came up big on the afternoon with five first-place victories and handfuls of second-place finishes at the Webster Natatorium.
Midway through the event the diving pool became the center of attention as Wesleyan's Hall picked up two first-place finishes over 200 points in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Hall's first win came in the 1-meter with 243 points. She was followed in second by
Thisbe Diamond '28with 230 points, and
Sophie Taubman '25 with 171 points. In the 3-meter, Hall collected 229 points as Taubman finished second with 167 points.
Stevenson kicked off the day for the Cardinals with a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing the distance race with a time of 11:00.76. 10 minutes later Stevenson claimed the title in the 200-yard freestyle as she clocked a final time in the race at 1:59.77. Later in the afternoon Stevenson placed second in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming a final time of 5:27.28.
The second of the first-place finals was Dezelic, swimming a 58.29 in the 100-yard backstroke. Dezelec was not done. Dezelic claimed the title in the 200-yard backstroke next, touching the wall with a final time at 2:08.72. Three events later Dezelic came up short in the 200-yard IM with a second-place final, swimming a 2:14.72.
Following Stevenson in the 1,000 free,
Elena Baird '26 placed third as she swam a 11:38.48. Baird then placed second in the 200-yard butterfly, clocking in at 2:17.47.
Anne Conway '26 swam a 2:03.27 in the 200 free behind Stevenson which was good enough for third place. In the 50-yard freestyle, Conway swam a 25.81 and placed second in the event. In the 100-yard freestyle Conway placed third with a 57.04.
The highest Cardinal finish in the 100-yard butterfly was
Ilaria Valentini '25 with a 1:02.47.
Dezelic,
Clara Preisig '25, Valentini, and
Kate Briegel '25 combined for third place in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing the race at 1:51.58. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Conway, Stevenson, Briegel, and Preisig placed third with a 1:44.84.
The Cardinals will return to the pool on Monday, Nov. 25, when they host Amherst at the Webster Natatorium at 5 p.m.
