MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan field hockey first-year midfielder
Emily Smith '29 earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is Smith's first career POW honor and comes on the heels of a remarkable weekend where she scored or assisted on all three Wesleyan goals that came in historic road wins over Williams and Middlebury.
Â
Smith starred on Sunday with two goals in a 2-1 double overtime win at Middlebury, as that win represented the first time Wesleyan has ever beaten the Panthers on the road. The two goals against Middlebury were the first goals of Smith's career, as she netted a game-tying goal late in the third quarter off a penalty corner to send the game into overtime. Then with 1:23 left in the second overtime period, Smith netted the game-winner as Wesleyan beat Middlebury for the first time since 2000.
Â
On Saturday, Smith tallied an assist on the only goal scored in a 1-0 road win at Williams. That goal proved vital as the Cardinals landed a shutout win over the Ephs, clinching the Little Three Championship for just the fourth time in team history and first since 2003.Â
Â
Wesleyan (8-3, 4-3 NESCAC) are red hot, having won four straight including three over nationally ranked teams, and head into a Saturday afternoon showdown with Bowdoin (9-2, 5-2 NESCAC) in an important clash with big postseason seeding implications on the line.
