MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore guard
Zach Wolinski '28 of the Wesleyan men's basketball team was honored with the NESCAC Player of the Week award, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the fourth time in the past six weeks that a Cardinal has earned Player of the Week while Wolinski becomes the first player in the NESCAC to win multiple POW honors this season.
Wolinski posted back-to-back career-high 30-point games over the weekend, leading the Cardinals to a pair of come-from-behind home wins over Bowdoin and Colby. Wolinski opened with his first career 30-point game, scoring 32 points, including 24 in the second half, to help Wesleyan erase a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat the Polar Bears. He shot 10-for-20 overall, 4-of-6 from three, and 8-of-9 at the charity stripe while adding four rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals in 38 minutes.
Against Colby, Wolinski netted 33 points (23 in the second half) as the Cardinals erased a four-point halftime deficit to finish the regular season undefeated at home. Another efficient outing saw Wolinski shoot 11-for-18 overall, 4-of-7 from three, and 7-of-9 from the line to go along with six rebounds and four assists.
For the week, Wolinski averaged 32.5 points on 55.3 percent shooting, 61.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 83.3 percent from the line, grabbed 10 rebounds, handed out six assists, and registered a pair of steals and blocks. He scored 47 points in the second halves of the two games.
Wolinski and the Cardinals (19-5, 9-1 NESCAC) earned the top-seed in the NESCAC Tournament for the second straight season and the third time in the past five seasons. Wesleyan will play host to the eight-seed Conn. College on Saturday at 2 PM in the Quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Tournament.
