The sixth-seeded Wesleyan men's soccer team makes the NESCAC tournament for the third straight season. The Cardinals look to win the NESCAC tournament for the first time since 2005, they will start their quest with a quarterfinal match at third-seeded Amherst on Saturday at 12:30 pm.
WESLEYAN SCOUTING REPORT
- The Cardinals played in a nail biter in last year's NESCAC quarterfinals against #4 Middlebury. After the two teams went scoreless through two overtimes, it went into penalty kicks where the Panthers came out victorious 5-4
- Wesleyan will make their third straight NESCAC tournament, their 19th overall
- Wesleyan put together their best conference record (5-3-2) since 2014 when they went 6-4
- Eight of the 11 Cardinals that started the NESCAC quarterfinal last year return, as well as all six bench players that saw at least one minute of action
- The Cardinals have had 15 different players record goals in 2022 (31 total goals)
CARDINALS TO WATCH
- 2021 First Team All-Region goalkeeper Liam Devanny '23 has led the team in net again in 2022, ranking third in the conference in saves (59) and saves per game (4.21)
- Mathis Blanc '26 made his first-career start in the regular season finale, making seven saves in a Cardinals' 2-1 victory over Connecticut College
- Kyle Burbage '25 has had a breakout sophomore season for the Cardinals, leading the team in goals with six (t-3rd in NESCAC) despite starting less than half of Wesleyan's games
- Phillip Cubeddu '23 leads the conference in assists by a wide margin at 10, with the next closest player only having six
- Lucas Ruehlemann '25 does a bit of everything for the Cardinals, recording four goals and four assists (both 2nd on team) in 15 games
- After playing in only 30 total minutes in 2021 Soren Tollis '25 had broken out in 2022, contributing three goals and three assists while playing in every game this season
- Evan O'Brien '24 is the only Cardinal to start in all 15 games this season, scoring three goals and adding an assist from the back line
- The senior captain Matthew Rubinstein '23 has been a steady contributor for the Cardinals, starting 12 of 14 games and contributing a goal
- Miles Lambke '25 and Mason Davisson '23 have been an extremely important part of the Wesleyan defense, starting 12 and 10 games respectfully
- Dane Harmaty '24 (3 goals, 2 assists) and Oliver Clarke '25 (1 goal) were both starters against Middlebury in last year's NESCAC tournament and look to avenge that defeat
- Zach Wheeler '25 and Max Hofstetter '24 have been spark plugs off the bench for Wesleyan. Hofstetter has been stellar on defense, while Wheeler provides some immediate offense with two goals and two assists in limited minutes
- Noah Hartzfeld '24 started nine of 14 games for Wesleyan, scoring a goal and adding an assist
AMHERST SCOUTING REPORT
- The Mammoths (9-1-5) have made the NESCAC Tournament every year since it began back in 2000
- Amherst have won the NESCAC Tournament five times, most recently in 2016
- Amherst leads the conference in goals per game (2.73) while also holding their opponents to less than a goal a game (0.8)
- The Mammoths have not allowed more than one goal in a game since September 25th (seven games) holding their opponent scoreless in five of those seven
- Amherst has only lost one game all season, tied for the fewest among NESCAC teams
MAMMOTHS TO WATCH
- Bernie White is in goal for the Mammoths, recording five shutouts and a .739 save percentage
- White has the fewest saves of any qualified NESCAC goalie (34 in 14 games) by virtue of not facing many shots. The strong Amherst defense is held together by Simon Kalinauskas and Ben Clark-Eden
- Flynn Hayton-Ruffner is the offensive catalyst for the Mammoths, leading the NESCAC in goals (7), points (20), and game-winning goals (3) while also placing 2nd in the conference for assists with six
- Amherst also has depth with 18 players playing in at least 10 games, with 16 of those playing in over 500 minutes of action
SERIES HISTORY
- This will be the 103rd meeting between these two NESCAC schools, with the Cardinals holding a 40-42-20 record against their counterparts
- The series has been fairly one-sided recently, with the Cardinals last win over the Mammoths coming in 2015. Since then, the Mammoths have gone 6-0-1 against the Cardinals including a victory this year
- The Cardinals are 16-25-10 against the Mammoths in Amherst, Massachusetts
