MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's golf team hosted the Little Three Championships at the Lyman Orchards Golf Club (Jones Course) on Wednesday. Williams College prevailed in the windy conditions and was crowned Little Three champs by defeating both Amherst College (6.5 – 5.5) and Wesleyan (7.0 – 5.0).
The Cardinals' 10.5 cumulative points earned is easily a new program record at the Little 3 Championships, besting Wesleyan's previous high mark of 8.5 back in 2006.
The Little Three Championship features a unique format in which each school fields a team of eight players. In the morning, the teams are divided into four, two-player teams, for an alternate shot match play. The team that wins the match is awarded a point. In the afternoon, the eight golfers from each school compete individually in single match play. The Little Three champion is the team that has the better head-to-head record against the other two programs.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- In the other head-to-head matchup, Amherst defeated Wesleyan, 7-5.
- Michael Dolce '24 started singles play off with a strong start, defeating James Delano of Williams while both players lost to Amherst's Jay Lassiter in the opening match of the singles portion
- Mike Dunderdale '23 continued the early momentum for Wesleyan, defeating Ben Byman of Amherst
- Ambrose Koo '23 was the third Cardinal to win a singles match, defeating John Menton of Williams
- Owen Cannizzo '24 came the closet to winning a singles both legs of singles match play as he earned a win over Brian Aslanian of Amherst before halving against David Brewer of Williams
- Daniel Kraft '23 won over Anthony Zhang of Amherst in singles play while Jacob Fain '23 halved his match with Philip Clifton of Williams
- Cumulative scores through singles play saw Wesleyan lose 5-3 decisions to both Amherst and Williams
