Women’s Crew Places Sixth to Open Fall Season at Riverfront Regatta

HARTFORD, CT. – In a thrilling open to the fall portion of the season, the Wesleyan women's varsity 8 crew team picked up a sixth-place finish out of a field of 35 boats at the Riverfront Regatta on Sunday morning as two boats finished in the Top 20.

RESULTS

The Cardinals opened the 2024-25 season in the same place as last year's finish but beat out 27 other teams this time around. Rhode Island claimed first place with a final clocked time of 16:44.90. Filling in the Top 5 behind Rhode Island was Williams, UConn, Trinity, and Riverside.

The women's varsity 8 crossed the finish line in just over 17 minutes, totaling a 17:20.05. The boat consisted of Ava Olsen '25 (coxswain), Alex Stanislaw '25, Em Moran '26, Nora Printy '26, Hailey Hutchinson '27, Ruby Roberts '27, Julia Lissack '27, Zoey McCarthy '28, and Alex Kuo '26.

Also finishing in the Top 20, the second varsity 8 boat of Aria Trotta '27(coxswain), Sydney Romer '28, Peyton Fern '25, Greta Armbrust '25, Annabelle Miller '25, Clara Preisig '25, Rebecca Schechter '26, Aleah Hurwitz '25, and Sophie Braver '27 claimed 11th as they came in at 17:57.83. The second varsity 8 finished five places ahead of last year's boat.

The final varsity 8 boat rowed a 19:30.19 for 25th place, bringing in Dana Hennings '27(coxswain), Anna Sewell '27, Stella Tollis '27, Sylvia Jenkins '28, Grace Donfield '26, Kiki Nebolsine '28, Marin Theis '27, Rebecca Lupkas '28, and Kaitlin Browne '28.

The morning didn't end with just top finishes in the women's open flight. The Cardinals' novice 4 took first place with a final time of 20:07.34, beating out Wentworth Rowing, West Point, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Romer, Clio Napier '28, McCarthy, Assana Bowen-Woods '28, and Browne fielded the team.

The Cardinals return to the water on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they compete in the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, MA.
