NEW LONDON, Conn. – The No. 2 Wesleyan women's crew team opened the spring season going 4-for-4 on Saturday morning, as all four varsity boats won their respective race against No. 10 Coast Guard on the Thames River.
Opening with the 3
rd varsity 8 race with near-perfect conditions for late March, Wesleyan's boat crossed the line in 7:00.7 which was just under five seconds faster than the Coast Guard boat which finished in 7:05.
The varsity 8 race followed with the Cardinal' top boat winning by nearly seven seconds as Wesleyan clocked in at 6:27 on the 1820m course while the Bears posted a time of 6:33.8.
The most-dominant win on the day came in the 2
nd varsity 8 race as Wesleyan's boat finished in 6:44.9, which was more than 26 seconds faster than Coast Guard's boat which finished in 7:11.2.
As the day moved along, the weather conditions worsened, peaking with the 4
th varsity 8 race which saw both teams fight against a head wind throughout. Wesleyan still managed to fight through the heavy wins and land a win as the Cardinals finished in 8:19.3, more than four seconds faster than Coast Guard's time of 8:23.6.
The clean sweep sets up Wesleyan well heading into the Jennifer McLaughlin Cup hosted at Lake Quinsigamond by WPI next Saturday. The Cardinals are the defending champion of the event and have won the title five times in the past eight seasons.
