WORCESTER, Mass. – Heavy winds impacted the New England Championships on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday as most of the grand finals were canceled in the afternoon due to unsafe rowing conditions. The one grand final that was contested was the varsity 8, which saw the Cardinals take fifth place out of 16 boats in the field.
The Cardinals' varsity 8 qualified for the grand final with the second-fastest preliminary time at 7:01.476, finishing behind only MIT. Then in the grand final in the early afternoon, Wesleyan's V8 clocked in at 8:20.135 which was good enough for fifth place.
The 2
nd varsity 8 turned in a preliminary time of 7:20.7 that earned the Cardinals a spot in the grand final while the 3
rd varsity 8 clocked in at 8:33.998 which saw Wesleyan advance to the petite final. Both 2V8 and 3V8 grand finals were not contested due to poor weather conditions.
The Cardinals are back at Lake Quinsigamond next Sunday for the National Invitational Rowing Championships, which includes the NESCAC Championship.
