Men’s Cross Country Steady Heading into NESCAC Championships

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Heading into the first championship race of 2024, the Wesleyan men's cross country team will make their first post-season showing at the NESCAC Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Bowdoin College Pickard Field Cross Country Course. The men's 8k will begin at 12 p.m. following the women's championship.

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

Last season the Cardinals ran their best NESCAC Championship team race since 2015, placing eighth of the 11 participating teams. Running Top 50 times, the Cardinals were led by Liam Calhoun '26 and Noah Mahoney '27. Calhoun placed 30th, crossing the finish line at 26:25.7 as he ran a 5:19 mile. Following on Calhoun's heels was Mahoney, placing 31st with a final race time at 26:25.9 and an identical mile.
The Cardinals had several top finishes in 2024 as a team, including a first-place team finish at the James Earley Invitational. The Cardinals also took third at the Cardinal Invitational, seventh at the NCAA Pre-National Championship, and 15th at the Conn. College Invitational.

Cardinals to Watch
  • While the Cardinals have several standouts this season, Mahoney looks to be the top qualifier for the Cardinals on Saturday. Mahoney opened the season at the Little Three Championship in ninth place, running a 18:59.6 before placing eighth at the Cardinal Invitational a week later, running a 25:12.34. Mahoney was the second-best placement for the Cardinals at the NCAA Pre-National race, closing the Top 20 at 20th, and a final time of 25:02.90. At the 2023 NCAA All-New England regional, Mahoney placed 25th before running as the Cardinals only qualifier at the National Championship, placing 281st.
  • Calhoun will also be gunning for a Top 50 finish for the Cardinals. At the Little Three Championship, Calhoun came in 11th, running a 19:02.8. The next week Calhoun ran a 25:25.27 for 13th place at the Cardinal Invitational. At the NCAA Pre-National race, Calhoun was 61st with a time of 25:37.84 before he closed the regular season at the Conn. College Invitational with a 53rd-place finish at 15:13.0. At the 2023 All-New England Regional, Calhoun placed 32nd.
  • Earning the first NESCAC Runner of the Week honor in program history for the Cardinals, Alex Kermath '26 cannot go unseen. Kermath earned the honor after placing 14th at the NCAA Pre-National race where he ran a team-best 24:51.21. Kermath opened the season with a 15th-place finish at the Little Three Championship, clocking in at 19:08.6. At the Cardinal Invitational, Kermath had the second-best finish for the Cardinals, placing ninth with a time at 25:13.39. At the 2023 All-New England Regional, Kermath finished in the Top 50 at 40th.
  • Nate Fogarty '25 will be a competitive Top 50 contender for the Cardinals. Fogarty placed 16th at the Little Three Championship, running a 19:10.4. Fogarty then placed 22nd at 25:37.29 at the Cardinal Invitational. At the NCAA Pre-National race, Fogarty came in at 64th with a final time of 25:29.27. Fogarty placed 50th at the All-New England Regional in 2023.
Williams College won the 2023 NESCAC Championship with four runners in the Top 20 as their own John Lucey won the individual title.
