MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan men's swimming and diving team spent the weekend re-decorating the record wall inside the Webster Family Natatorium this weekend as they set four school records in 48 hours while competing in the Jayden Szkirka Memorial Championships while placing fourth of five teams.
Coast Guard won the weekend and was followed in the standings by Amherset, Trinity, Wesleyan, and East Conn.
The Cardinals's relay teams found their footing over the last two days. The 200-yard medley relay team of
Harrison Hong '25,
Fritz Bretall '25,
Nathan Wu '28, and
Brody Schrepfer '28 swam a new school record of 1:31.30 on Saturday evening. The combined efforts earned them a first-place victory. The previous record of 1:32.39 was set by Bretall, Hong,
Sam Anderson '24, and
Daniel Chan '24 just this past year. The same relay team placed second in the 400-medley relay, swimming a new school record 3:23.62. Hong, Anderson, Daniel Ismen '26, and
Mason Polaner '24 set the previous record of 3:26.04 last winter as well.
Wu and Schrepfer were not done. On top of the relay records, the freshmen broke 27-year-old records in the breaststroke events held by Michael Garret from 1997. Wu swam a clocked time of 2:03.43 in the 200-yard breaststroke, placing third as he bested Garrett's previous record time of 2:04.57. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Schrepfer placed third as well, touching the wall at 56.60. Garrett's previous time was a 56.78.
Hong won the 50-yard freestyle outright, swimming a final time of 20.85 as the second victory for the Cardinals. Hong placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a 48.96 before placing third in the 100-yard freestyle while clocking a final time of 46.17.
Bretall followed Hong in the 100-fly in fourth place, swimming a 50.56. Schrepfer placed directly behind Wu in the 200-breast in fourth place, coming in at 2:04.50.
The Cardinals return to action in 2025 on Saturday, Jan. 4, traveling to Babson for a 12 p.m. start.
