MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's swimming & diving team recorded nine first place finishes on their way to the team's first win of the season, as the Cardinals defeated Trinity 153-131 on Wednesday night in a dual meet from the Webster Family Natatorium.
A group effort saw five different Cardinals capture wins in individual events while Wesleyan won both the 200 medley and 200 free relay events on the night.
Opening the evening with a first and second place showing in the 200 medley, it was
Harrison Hong '25,
Cooper Mayo '26,
Fritz Bretall '25, and
Nathan Wu '28 who combined for a time of 1:36.71 to capture first place. Wesleyan's B group of
Jonathan Lee '28,
Devayan Roychoudhury '26,
Fred Li '25, and
David Kantar '25 made it a 1-2 sweep, as they finished in 1:38.40.
Hong, Kantar, and Wu later teamed up with
Brody Schrepfer '28 in the 200 free relay to take another first place finish as the team touched the wall in 1:27.41.
Both Hong and Schrepfer completed their nights with two first place finishes in their respective individual events, as the duo placed first in every event they competed in on the evening. Hong placed first in the 100 fly (23.14 seconds) and 100 back (26.13) while Schrepfer dominated the distance events, capturing wins in the 200 free (1:18.87) and 500 free (4:46.11), winning the 500 free by more than nine seconds.
The three other individual winners on the night included Bretall in the 50 back (24.66) while Roychoudhury took first in the 100 breast (1:01.12) and Wu won the 50 free (22.07).
Bretall rounded out his night finishing runner-up in the 50 fly (23.67), finishing just 0.03 seconds behind the winner from Trinity, while Roychoudhury was second-best in the 50 breast (27.74) and Wu placed second in the 100 free (23.90).
Rounding out the field for Wesleyan with runner-up showings included Li in the 100 fly (24.40), Kantar in the 50 free (22.38), Mayo in the 100 breast (28.71), and
Owen Coblin '28 placed second in the 400 IM (4:27.16).
A busy week for Wesleyan continues Saturday as the Cardinals host Springfield and Roger Williams for a tri-meet that begins at Noon. That meet also serves as Senior Day for the Cardinals as it is the last home meet for Wesleyan in the 2024-25 season.
