Owen Sweet Named Joe Concannon Award Semifinalist

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Senior Captain Owen Sweet '25 has been named one of 40 semifinalists for the 24th annual Joe Concannon Award as announced by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston on Thursday, Feb. 6. The award is presented to the best American-born NCAA Division II/III men's hockey player in New England.

Featured in the largest semifinal field to date, Sweet was amongst 10 other New England Small College Athletic Conference honorees and the first for the Cardinals in over a year. The award, created in 2001 to honor the legacy of former Boston Globe reporter Joe Concannon, has been presented to two Cardinals in its 24-year history. Jim Pancyzkowski won in 2004 while Walker Harris received the award in 2020. The last semifinalists represented were Jake Lachance '23 and Wiggle Kerbrat '23.

Prior to the start of the 2024-25 season, Sweet was named a team captain for the second consecutive season in his career with the Cardinals. Competing in his best season to date with four games remaining in the regular season, Sweet leads his teammates in scoring with eight goals. Throughout the season, Sweet has recorded six, two-point matches, his two-goal night coming against Conn. on Jan. 25, as the Cardinals ran away with a 6-3 victory. In the 3-2 upset of No. 10 Endicott on Jan. 14, Sweet assisted on Hayden Hanes' game-winning goal.

In the NESCAC, Sweet's efforts on the ice rank him among the Top 10 in several statistical categories. Averaging a point per game (1.00) Sweet ranks seventh among all NESCAC players as his 20 points in 20 games rank fifth in the conference. With 12 assists under his belt, Sweet is listed sixth while his eight goals finish at seventh as the season nears its end.

Through 89 career-games played, Sweet has recorded 29 goals, 34 assists, and 63 points. Sweet holds a standing .184 shot percentage while accumulating eight power play goals, four short-handed goals, and four game-winning goals.

The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston will announce the finalists and winner of the 2025 Joe Concannon award in March prior to the start of the NCAA Frozen Four.
