Men’s Swimming Breaks Three School Records Through First Two Days of the NESCAC Championships

New school record times posted in the 50 fly, 200 IM, and 200 free relay events

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Wesleyan men's swimming & diving team saw three new school record times on Friday's action at the 2025 NESCAC Championships hosted by Middlebury College. Through two days and 10 total events, the Cardinals sit in 10th place out of 11 teams with 199 team points. The Cardinals established new varsity records in the 50 fly, 200 IM, and 200 free relay. Harrison Hong '25 was involved in two of those record-breaking times, as he broke his own school record in the 50 fly while also contributing in the 200 free relay's record-breaking performance. Brody Schrepfer '28 posted the new school record in the 200 IM.

Action started with the 200 free relay wherein Hong, Fritz Bretall '25, Nathan Wu '28, and David Kantar '25 combined to finish in 1:23.92, good enough for 10th place overall, while the time is a new school record as it bested the previous mark of 1:24.03 set back in 2018.

Hong then took a leading role in the 50 fly, first qualifying for the championship final with a school record time of 21.75 seconds in qualifying. That time was the second-fastest of all 49 swimmers in the event in preliminaries. He went on to finish the event in fourth place overall with a time of 21.93 seconds in the championship final in the night session on Friday. That fourth place showing marks the highest individual finish for a Cardinal at the NESCAC Championships since 2018 when Brandon Pearson '19 placed fourth in the 3-meter dive and Ali Pourmaleki '18 finished fourth in the 200 fly.

Bretall also showed well in the 50 fly, qualifying for the consolation final with a qualifying time of 22.80 seconds. He came back in the night session and placed 14th overall with a time of 22.85 seconds in the B final. He completed his night with a consolation final appearance in the 50 back, qualifying with a time of 23.56 seconds before touching the wall in 23.66 seconds in the consolation final which was also good enough for 14th place.

Schrepfer continued a strong night with a school record time in the 200 IM preliminaries, completing the event in 1:52.27 to set a new record and earn a spot into the consolation final. The first-year posted a time of 1:52.34 in the B final, placing 14th overall.

Wesleyan completing the evening with a 10th place finish in the 400 medley relay, as the Cardinals' A team of Hong, Schrepfer, Bretall, and Kantar clocked in at 3:23.87.

The 2025 NESCAC Championships continue on Saturday with eight more events including the 200 medley relay, 1000 free, 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 3-meter dive.
