Hall of Fame Inductees
Coached by the late Terry Jackson, inducted into the Wesleyan Hall of Fame in 2010, the 1991 men’s soccer team set several school records on their way to an ECAC New England Championship and Top 10 ranking nationally.
The squad featured multiple All-NESCAC performers while Vezir Ajro ’92 was a First Team All-American and Dan Craig ’92 was lauded with Second Team All-American honors.
The campaign started with an eight-match unbeaten streak (7-0-1) while the Cardinals defeated Amherst 3-2 in double overtime and Williams 1-0 to close out the regular season and secure the Little Three title.
In the ECAC New England Tournament, being ranked No. 1 in the region, Wesleyan served as hosts. After putting aside Middlebury and Fitchburg State in the two prior rounds, the Cardinals were set to meet longtime foe Williams in the title match. Looking to secure the program’s third ECAC New England title, Wesleyan went up 2-0 thanks to goals from Amos Magee ’93 and Craig less than 15 minutes into the action. Williams answered back in the 20th minute to make it 2-1 but the Cardinal defense and goalkeeper David Barrett ’93 – who made five saves in the contest – provided enough to keep the ECAC trophy in Middletown.
Despite securing the ECAC crown and being ranked No. 7 in the nation, Wesleyan was not eligible to compete in the NCAA Tournament at the time due to NESCAC rules. Even still, Wesleyan’s 1991 season finished on an eight-win win streak while the Cardinals were undefeated at home (10-0-1). The 15 wins still stands as a single-season program record.
